Hi
I'm slowly getting NetMRG working here, but I still have problems when I want to use a template graph.
Is there somewhere a howto or walkthrough for applying a template graph?
I'm mapping a Linux box's ethernet interfaces, and I have a monitor on each interface for in and out bytes - and I see data on the monitor graphs.
If I go to Template Graphs and "Apply template to..." the interface, I get a graph with values for IP address and System/Interface names fine, but the graph never contains any data.
Am I doing something wrong? I have custom graphs working beautifully..

Did you delete the template group? This is what all our default template graphs are based on.
If you have a new device with proper interface monitors, you can use that to modify the template lan graph.

| Instead of the "Apply Template To" feature, have you tried the "Monitor/Graph" option on the Interface Cache page? |

Yes I did delete the template group - the doc doesn't seem to make mention that it is a bad thing to do!

I can modify the template to use one of the Linux box interfaces - and it works fine, but then all my graphs use that interface?!
Have I got it wrong at the concept level. When I Apply a template graph, or Graph an Interface, the newly created graph should automatically adapt to the Interface chosen, provided you don't delete the template group? |

Are you saying that's what happens, or is that what happens?
When you add a specific device's monitors to a template graph, only the type should be copied, not the data. So if you have ifInOctects and ifOutOctets for a template graph, those types will be copied to the new interface

That sounds correct. 'Apply template to..' will apply the monitors to whatever subdevice you select. For disks and interfaces, however, we have some additional logic when you goto 'view interfaces' or 'view disks' in Groups..Devices menus that will automatically keep track of interface names, disk paths, etc.
Let me know if this actually helped, or just confused the matter more ;)

I started again from scratch - and this time I didn't remove the template group - and the template graphs work beautifully.

That post really helped.
I've got the hang now - and I've been adding SNMP tests all afternoon to better monitor a whole pile of servers etc.
I'm a busy chap but I'm willing to do a little towards some doc if that's any help? |

That'd be great! Unless you're an SGML expert (I'm not), sending patches for the docs might be a pain.
I think the best way to do it right now would be to get a bugs.netmrg.net account and submit some bugs against our documentation with descriptions and possibly some content. Whatever area you have an idea for ,like, "during the install docs, it should mention that the template group is important. It should probably say that around THIS (fill in THIS) part". Anything lik e that would be a big help.
If bugs is a bit intimidating, posting to the dev forum might be a good place.
